Do you use periods when abbreviating United States?
In casual writing, when United States is functioning as a noun (as in, “We are traveling to the U.S.”), it's a matter of personal preference. You can either spell out United States or abbreviate it, with periods or without.
Is it US or US grammar?

Both of these abbreviations can be correct. The difference between them (whether to use periods or not) is just a matter of style. The Associated Press Stylebook prefers the abbreviation U.S. with periods. However, the Chicago Manual of Style prefers US without periods.
